Protect Your Roof When Hanging Christmas Lights
Updated: Oct 7, 2020
It’s that time of year when we all get the Christmas decor out and start hanging lights and putting up yard decorations. We want to bring the festiveness to our neighborhoods and enjoy the beauty it brings. Many people hang lights on their homes but there are some things to be aware of and some tips to help protect your roof and you from damage.
Never get on your roof when there is snow, ice or even water on the roof. Being on a roof presents its own set of dangers and there’s no need to increase it by attempting to install lights in inclement weather. Additionally, if there's snow and ice on the ground you have to be equally as careful and be sure to use ladder safety if you MUST hang lights in these conditions but we recommend against it.
Never attach lights to your roof or gutters by stapling, nailing or screwing them into the shingles. Even a small hole in shingles can cause a leak and result in costly repairs. Putting holes in the gutter can cause water to drain inappropriately as well. Some people put other Christmas decorations on their roofs too and the same rules apply in regards to securing these items.
Clips are your friend and do you know how many different types exist? A lot! You can see some options here. The type of clip will depend on the type of roof you have and the type of lights you’re wanting to hang. There are clips for flat roofs, gutters, shingles, eaves and even roof peak clips. The peak clips are generally used by professional installers but if you’re brave enough to go that high to hang your own lights these will prevent damage to your roof. When choosing your clips just make sure you’re getting the right kind for your type of roof and lights.
When you do get on your roof, consider the type of roof you have. For example, if you have a tile roof, be sure to step on the peaks and not the valleys. This will help prevent the cracking or breaking of your tiles. Be sure to walk carefully and wear soft soled shoes like sneakers to help prevent damage to shingles.
