Should You Replace Your Roof In the Winter?

You may be looking into getting your roof replaced during the colder months and asking yourself if this can be done or what should I know before hiring someone to do this. These are good questions and we’ve got the answers for you. While warmer temperatures are ideal, you may need a replacement during the colder months so it’s good to know that yes a roof can be replaced when it's colder but there are things to keep in mind before you hire a contractor to replace your roof in the winter.

Is there a required temperature for a Roof Installation?

While there’s not a “required” temperature, the ideal minimum temperature is 40+ degrees so this can definitely pose a problem with our Colorado winters. And this is 40+ degrees over a couple of days minimum including overnight temperatures. When it comes to asphalt shingles, if it’s too cold it can lead to damaged shingles and make it more difficult for some self adhesive shingles to adhere properly. In addition to asphalt shingles, both fiberglass and shakes can have issues in cold temperatures as well because they can break easily. If you have or want a metal roof, these are good to go in the winter months because they don't rely on adhesive and it is a sturdy product. See our blog on metal roofs to learn if it's the right product for you. It's also good to know that even if the air temperature is only 40 degrees, the sun and the heat in your attic can have an affect on the roof and help with adhesion.

To ensure you get a quality product your roofer will want to make sure there are several days of weather at 40+ degrees Fahrenheit with no snow, rain or other weather issues during the build time. Because your roofer isn’t a weatherman, weather could roll in during your build which may cause a delay which is something else to keep in mind.

Does a roof install take longer in the Winter?

It can, but it may not. Clear as mud right? In addition to unexpected weather coming in, which as we all know is common in Colorado, the colder weather can affect the workers who may need to take more frequent breaks to warm up, the product has to be handled with more care and it could cause delivery or install delays if it snows which could prevent work from happening. This is all something to keep in mind if you’re wanting to tackle this during the winter months. In a perfect world, the temperature would be 40+ degrees and sunny for several days in a row which shouldn’t lead to delays but knowing there could be delays for the reasons we mentioned will make it a less stressful situation for you.

Just as a reminder, home warranties do not cover a full roof replacement, but your home warranty contract may cover some repairs due to leaks caused by a faulty roof. If your home is in dire need of a roof replacement, your home insurance policy may offer significant coverage. The most important thing to consider is you will need to document the damage as soon as you notice it if you wish to have a seamless transaction with your carrier.
